Total Loss Settlements in Louisiana: Why Insurance Companies Often Undervalue Your Vehicle
Accidents happen—whether you drive a car, motorcycle, or heavy truck in Louisiana. That’s why you carry insurance. However, unless your policy includes an Agreed Value provision, the payout for a total loss vehicle is determined solely by the insurance company.
How Insurers Calculate Your Vehicle’s Value
Most major insurers rely on third-party valuation services such as CCC, Carfax, Autosource, or Mitchell. They input your vehicle’s details—including year, make, model, mileage, engine, options, and condition—into their system.
The software then pulls comparable vehicle sales or auction data to estimate what your car, truck, or motorcycle was worth immediately before the accident. Adjusters can add or subtract amounts for mileage, optional equipment, prior damage, or condition issues.
The problem? Insurance appraisers sometimes select comparables that don’t accurately reflect your vehicle’s true pre-loss value. Common tactics include:

Choosing vehicles with significantly higher mileage and applying large downward adjustments.
Limiting the geographic search area, which reduces the pool of relevant sales.
Using dissimilar vehicles that don’t match your make, model, options, or condition.
Undervaluing specialty vehicles (such as diesel trucks) that typically hold their value better than average.

These practices can result in lowball offers that fall short of what your vehicle would have sold for on the open market.

Your Options as a Louisiana Vehicle Owner
You can accept the insurer’s initial (often reduced) settlement. Or, you can take action by hiring an independent appraiser to prepare a professional, objective valuation report that reflects your vehicle’s actual pre-accident market value.
When choosing an appraisal firm, do your due diligence:

Check online reviews on sites like the BBB, Google, or others.
Confirm whether the company primarily works for insurance companies or focuses on helping individual vehicle owners. Potential conflicts of interest can affect the outcome.

Most auto insurance policies in Louisiana (and across the U.S.) include an Appraisal Clause. This provision allows each side to appoint an independent appraiser. The two appraisers attempt to negotiate a fair settlement—often settling at a compromise figure, such as the midpoint of their valuations.
If the appraisers cannot agree, they select a neutral umpire. The umpire’s decision (when combined with one appraiser’s valuation) typically becomes binding on the amount of the loss. In rare cases where no umpire can be agreed upon, a court may appoint one. While litigation remains an option afterward, the appraisal process resolves most disputes efficiently.
Important Reminder
Insurance companies are businesses. Their model is to collect as much in premiums as possible while paying out as little as possible on claims. Keep this in mind when reviewing your total loss settlement offer.
At The St. Lucie Appraisal Company, we provide independent valuation appraisals and representation in Appraisal Clause negotiations for clients in Louisiana and all 50 states. Our standard fee for most vehicles is $550 for the comprehensive valuation appraisal and support. An additional $275 may apply for extended representation during Appraisal Clause negotiations. Umpire fees (if needed) are typically split between you and the insurer. On average, only about 10% of cases proceed to the umpire stage.
With total loss frequency reaching a record 23.1% according to the CCC 2026 Crash Course Report, more Louisiana drivers are facing undervalued settlements. Don’t settle for less than your vehicle is worth.
